What Can Pedestrians Do to Stay Safe on Iowa Roads?

Pedestrians are the minority on the roads; however, pedestrians typically have the right of way, which requires that drivers of vehicles watch out for people walking on the sidewalks, streets, or crossing intersections.

Although most everyone understands that a pedestrian would be the one to suffer an injury in the event of an Iowa pedestrian-motor vehicle accident, not all drivers watch out for people who commute on foot.

When do pedestrian accidents in Iowa occur?

  • When drivers are distracted
  • When drivers run red lights
  • When drivers do not turn to look before making a right hand turn or pulling out of a parking lot exit
  • When drivers speed

Because cars are still the dominant force on the roads, pedestrians need to be smart and safe when walking in traffic.

How can pedestrians stay safe on Iowa streets?

  • Do not listen to music or talk on your cell phone while walking. Stay alert and listen to what is going on around you on the road.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Wear reflective gear, carry a flashlight and be extra careful when walking after dark, as drivers have a harder time seeing you.
  • Obey traffic signals and walk on sidewalks whenever possible.
  • If you have to walk on the street, walk facing traffic and as far left as possible.
  • Attempt to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of their cars.
  • Never let children cross streets by themselves.
