Are Cedar Rapids Traffic Cameras Changing Driver Behavior?

Posted on Oct 19, 2010

A recent report came out indicating that the City of Cedar Rapids has generated over $600,000 from the traffic cameras they installed around the city. The city's projection was $750,000 in revenue for the first full year, and they are well on pace to meet and exceed that number since this figure only shows the revenue for seven months.

The cameras sit at seven intersections in the city and on northbound Interstate 380. There have been over 27,500 violations, and the city is averaging about $2,900 a day in revenue from traffic tickets. The city receives all the money except $30 per ticket that the camera vendor, Gatso USA receives.

In addition to purchasing more cameras, the police department has stated they would like to purchase laser speed guns and additional accident reconstructionists which would help to reduce crashes in the Cedar Rapids area.

Since the onset of these traffic cameras, accidents in Cedar Rapids have decreased compared to the previous year. In fact, three people were killed in accidents on an Interstate 380 S-curve last year, but there hasn't been a crash in that area this year. Also, crashes involving injuries have dropped about 12 percent compared to last year.

The police department says they are not driven by the money, but rather their goal is to reduce car accidents and injuries. Police do believe drivers are more aware of the traffic cameras and are trying to change their driving behaviors.
