Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson has made a public statement about an accident-prone intersection in Eastern Iowa. He is asking the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and state officials to do something about this intersection for the safety of the public.
The accident-prone intersection is located at Highway 218 and Cedar-Wapsi Road, and the Sheriff has said his deputies have responded to one too many Eastern Iowa accidents at this location.
The most recent accident at this intersection occurred on Thursday, September 15, 2011. Although the female victim suffered minor injuries, other accident victims in this same location haven't been that fortunate. Since May, sheriff's deputies have responded to eight accidents in this same spot, involving two deaths.
The problem with this intersection is that the drivers on Cedar-Wapsi Road have to cross a four-lane, divided highway with oncoming traffic traveling at speeds of 65 miles per hour.
Peter Hjelmstad, a DOT representative from the District Engineer's office in Mason City, indicated that highway planners are well aware of this issue, and they know that traffic at this intersection has gone far beyond the projections, as it currently sees about 18,000 vehicles per day. However, designing an overpass for the Cedar-Wapsi Road would cost about $17 million dollars, and currently there is no funding for this project.
The Sheriff is concerned there will be more fatal accidents if nothing is done about this intersection issue.
The Law Offices of Brady & O'Shea would like to wish the female involved in this recent accident a complete and fast recovery.
