On Tuesday, January 4, 2011, an accident involving a bicycle and a car occurred in North Liberty. Police said the crash took place on Highway 965 around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The driver of the automobile was traveling on Lions Drive and attempted to turn onto Highway 965 when the vehicle collided with a bicyclist. Authorities said that the driver of the vehicle did stop at the stop sign before proceeding to turn onto the highway; however, she didn't see the bicyclist.
Timothy Green, 56, of Coralville was the bicyclist involved in this crash. He was riding his bike on the shoulder of Hwy 965 traveling northbound. The North Liberty police said that Karen Huntley, the 58-year-old driver, of North Liberty just didn't see the bicycle.
Authorities said Green was injured in the crash and was taken by ambulance to the University Hospitals in Iowa City for medical treatment. At the time of the accident, Green's injuries were reported to be serious but not life-threatening.
Police did verify that Green had lights on his bicycle. North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin said, "There's usually a street light there, but because of the construction, it's not there anymore. Since they've been redoing the road, some of those intersections have not had lights put back up yet."
There are charges pending in this Iowa car crash.
Highway 965 was closed down in both directions in order for the police to conduct an investigation.
We wish Timothy Green a full and speedy recovery.
