College Baseball Player Killed in Des Moines Car Accident

Posted on Sep 01, 2010

On Monday, August 23, 2010 at approximately 12:15 a.m. a deadly car accident took place on Interstate 35, in West Des Moines, Iowa. Sadly, this collision took the life of Wichita State baseball player, 21-year-old Mitch Caster.

The West Des Moines police department said it appeared Caster was traveling south on I-35 when his SUV crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a semi-truck. This early morning crash in Iowa turned into a tragic accident for a young baseball player.

According to some of Caster's teammates, he was returning to Wichita after playing on his summer team. He had just played in a Sunday afternoon championship game in Wisconsin and was traveling back to school. His teammate Jimmy Waters, of Iowa, was also traveling back to school with Caster; however, he was driving the car in front of Caster and witnessed the entire accident from his rear-view mirror.

A witness at the scene of the accident said Waters was very distraught and even indicated that they weren't out drinking. He said they were just trying to get back to school after their baseball game.

The semi-truck driver who was traveling northbound on I-35 was not injured.

The crash still remains under investigation at this point.

We are deeply saddened to hear of this tragic accident. Our thoughts and condolences are with Mitch Caster's family, friends and teammates.
