Deadly Iowa Crash in Remote Area Leaves Passenger Stranded for Hours

Posted on Sep 21, 2011

On Wednesday, August 24, 2011, a deadly crash in Linn County occurred along Old River Road. Authorities recently released the name of the driver who died in this fatal accident near Cedar Rapids and the Cedar River.

Michael Dewayne Jones, 39, has been identified as the driver who died at the scene of the accident. Officials believe that Jones, of 1311 15th St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, was driving on Old River Road when the car ran off the road.

According to Linn County authorities, the car slid down the embankment, which was approximately five to six feet below the level of Old River Road. The crash occurred in a secluded spot that was hidden by trees.

A rescuer spotted the car and saw a woman trapped inside the vehicle, and called for help. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the passenger was seriously injured. Dannelle Fite, 32, the passenger in the vehicle, was taken to Mercy Medical Center and later transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Authorities have indicated that the injuries Fite suffered were serious, but they do not know if any were life-threatening.

According to Fite, she was trapped inside the car for several hours starting the evening before the rescuer found her.

Residents in this area have complained about the condition of this section on Old River Road, as it changes from asphalt-like seal coat pavement to lose rock. Some say that hitting gravel on this curve could cause a driver to lose control.

The Law Offices of Brady & O'Shea is deeply saddened to hear about this tragic crash and would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Michael Dewayne Jones and best wishes for a full recovery to Dannelle Fite.
