Decision to Outlaw Drop-Side Cribs Keeps Iowa Children Safe

The Consumer Product Safety Commission unanimously voted to ban the manufacture, sale and resale of drop-side cribs. Drop-side cribs have caused more than 30 infant and toddler deaths in the last 10 years, including the tragic death of a Cedar Rapids baby, which prompted the recall of 600,000 Dorel Asia cribs in January of this year. This decision by the CPSC makes Iowa children safer by taking an unsafe product off of the market. In the past five years, 9 million drop side cribs have been recalled after being found to be unsafe. Parents of children killed or injured by drop-side cribs have been working long and hard to have these cribs removed from the maket. In addition to removal from the market, the new regulations prohibit the use of drop-side cribs in hotels and child care facilities. The ban will go into effect in June 2011.
