Posted on Oct 11, 2010

Doe Run Resources, a lead mining, milling and smeltering company located in Missouri, had agreed to pay $65 million to correct lead safety violations and $7 million as a penalty for the violations. Doe Run Resources operates the only remaining primary lead smelter in the United States and also operates several mining and milling facilities. The EPA found that Doe Run was violating the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.

"For years families with children near Doe Run's facilities have been exposed to unacceptable levels of lead, one of the most dangerous neurotoxins in the environment, infants and young children are at the greatest risk from lead exposure, which even at low levels can cause behavioral problems, learning deficits and lowered IQ. Today's settlement requires Do Run to take aggressive action to clean up their act and work to ensure that families living near the companies facilities are protected from lead poisoning and other harmful pollution," said Cynthia Giles from the EPA
