On Saturday, July 31, 2010 a Des Moines driver lost consciousness and crashed into another vehicle while driving on the interstate. Police said the wreck occurred just after 6:20 p.m. near mile marker 232 on Interstate 80 in Johnson County.
The driver, 16-year-old Heaven Lea Slye of Des Moines, was traveling westbound on I-80 when she lost consciousness for no apparent reason. The Iowa State Patrol said Slye drove into the median, tried to over-correct, lost control of her vehicle, and rolled the car. She was driving a 2005 Chevrolet PT Cruiser and collided with a Chevy Silverado pickup truck. Harry Stahowick, the 58-year-old driver from Runnells, was injured in the crash.
There was a total of five people injured in this Iowa car accident - two drivers and three passengers. Iowa police did say both drivers and all passengers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision. The victims were all taken by ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for medical care. They are all being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The passengers involved in this crash are 33-year-old Tricia Ann Edwards of Urbandale; 27-year-old Jennifer Lee Miner of Altoona; and 18-year-old Leigh Marie Fenner of Mooringsport, La.
Investigators are looking into this crash, as there has still been no explanation as to why Slye lost consciousness.
Our thoughts are with all of the victims who suffered injuries in this wreck. We wish them a speedy recovery.
