A slow-moving snow storm making its way across Iowa has claimed two lives on slick roads 35 miles west of Des Moines, Iowa. Authorities says that two people were killed when their pickup truck slid across an Interstate 80 median and collided with a semi yesterday around 4:00 p.m. The crash took place just east of Stuart, Iowa. Eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed for nearly four hours in the wake of the crash.
The Iowa Department of Transportation currently reports that roads in the western half of the state are partially or completely covered with snow. This includes Interstates 29, 35, 80, and 680. Total snow accumulations could be as much as 6 to 11 inches in the western part of Iowa, up to 7 inches in central Iowa, and 2 to 5 inches in eastern Iowa. A winter weather advisory is in effect for all but the northeast corner of the state and drivers are advices to take extra care when traveling during the storm.
