Habitual Offender Pleads Guilty to Running Over Des Moines Teen

Posted on Feb 09, 2011

Joel Simpson plead guilty today of running over Des Moines teenager Melissa Ann Robinson last June. Robinson, who was 14 at the time of the crash, was severely injured and underwent several surgeries. Simpson plead guilty to four charges which could land him in prison for up to 14 years. His trial was to begin Monday.

Simpson admitted that he was under the influence of marijuana when he ran a stop sign and hit the girl. Robinson was dragged for 75 feet, then fell from the car. Simpson continued on until the car hit a tree. Robinson suffered a broken arm, broken facial bones, and an injured leg. Her injuries required surgeries to put plates in her face, insert pins in her leg, and repair a tear in the aortic valve of her heart.

Simpson has a long record of driving violations, including drunken driving and driving while barred. He is one of the roughly 5,000 drivers in Iowa classified as a "habitual offender". That classification, imposed by the Department of Transportation, means that he received at least three moving violations, such as speeding, failing to stop, or failing to yield, over a 12-month period. His license has been revoked seven times.
