Head-on Crash Sends Six to the Hospital

Posted on Sep 01, 2010

On Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at approximately 9:20 a.m. a serious head-on accident took place on Highway 30. Iowa police said the car accident occurred near Van Horne between 21st Avenue and 73rd Street. This Wednesday morning crash injured six people.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office investigated this collision. They described the crash as a two-car accident. It is believed that the driver of a 1998 Plymouth van was traveling east on 73rd Street and crossed over the center line into westbound traffic hitting a 1993 Buick LeSabre head-on.

The driver of the van is 22-year-old Ashley Graves of Alburnett. She was traveling with her two young children and her niece. All the children were under the age of three and were properly secured in their seatbelts with child restraints.

The vehicle Graves hit was driven by Kevin Landis, 18, of Cedar Rapids. He was traveling with 18-year-old Hilary Erickson from Cedar Rapids.

Responders to the scene had to use the Jaws of Life to extract both the drivers from their vehicles. All six victims were injured and were transported to local hospitals in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

Highway 30 was closed for almost two hours in order to clear the wreckage. There is no word on how serious the victims' injuries are at this point.

We wish all the victims of this Iowa car crash a full and speedy recovery.
