On Interstate 80 near Grinnell, a serious car accident occurred on August 15, 2010. The accident sent several people to the hospital, and one of the passengers recently died. Because the crash has now turned into a fatal accident, investigators have reopened the investigation.
The accident occurred just past 2 p.m., when a male driver of a pickup truck was traveling eastbound on I-80 and lost control of his vehicle. The truck, which was pulling a camper, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Toyota SUV head-on.
The pickup truck was driven by 60-year-old Vance O. Faulkner of Cedar Rapids. His vehicle came to rest on its side after colliding head-on with the Toyota. He was taken to a Des Moines hospital for medical care immediately following the accident.
There were several people in the Toyota SUV who were injured. Sally A. Hingst ,45, and Barbara J. Hingst, 60, both from Iowa City, were injured and taken to a Des Moines hospital for medical treatment as well. Melissa A. Standard, 49, of Burlington suffered severe injuries from the car accident. She later died from her injuries at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Standard was the front-seat passenger in the Toyota SUV, which was traveling westbound on I-80. There is no word on the conditions of Sally Hingst, Barbara Hingst, or Faulkner at this time.
Investigators have reopened the investigation; however there have not been any charges filed against Faulkner.
We are saddened to hear of this tragic car accident, and send our condolences to the family and friends of all who were affected by this accident.
