Iowa Man Faces 25-Year Prison Term for Vehicular Homicide

Posted on Nov 03, 2010

On Friday, October 22, 2010, a jury deliberated for five hours before deciding the fate of Troy Fox, a 36-year-old man from Hiawatha. The jury convicted Fox of vehicular homicide for a tragic accident that occurred last fall.

Fox was involved in a car crash on October 5, 2009 after he got behind the wheel while intoxicated. Fox drove drunk on Interstate Highway 380, losing control of his vehicle and hitting a light pole. Fox had his seat belt fastened yet still sustained injuries. His passenger, Ruben Mayo, 32, did not have his seat belt fastened, and was seriously injured.

Mayo suffered spinal cord injury, which paralyzed him from the mid-neck down. Since he needed a ventilator to breathe, he decided to end life support and passed away.

Mayo's attorneys argued that Fox's negligent drunk driving led to Mayo's death, and Fox's attorneys argued that Mayo chose to end his life. The jury listened to all arguments and deliberated for hours before finding Fox guilty.

Sentencing for Fox is scheduled in Linn County District Court on December 17, 2010. He faces a 25-year prison term.

We are saddened to hear of this tragic Iowa car accident, and offer our condolences to the family and friends of Ruben Mayo.
