Iowa School Bus Crash Sends Four Students to Hospital

Posted on Feb 05, 2011

On Tuesday, January 11, 2011, an Iowa car and school bus accident occurred. Police said the crash happened early in the day as the school bus was picking up children on the way to school.

The Iowa State Patrol said that a 30-year-old driver, of Hopkinton, lost control of her car and caused the accident. Shawna Beitz was driving her car on Highway 38 in Delaware County, just south of Sand Springs when she lost control of it. Her vehicle crossed the center line and hit the school bus.

Police said the vehicle slid sideways into the Monticello school bus. The driver of the car was taken to the University of Iowa Hospital. She remained hospitalized that day, and her condition has not been released at this time.

The school bus driver was not injured; however, four students were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The Monticello Superintendent Chris Anderson said that that sturdy school bus construction prevented serious injuries to the children.

The Iowa car and bus crash closed Highway 38 for approximately two hours for cleanup and investigation.

We wish the students a full and speedy recovery as well as the driver of the automobile.
