On February 3, 2011, a destructive truck accident occurred on westbound Interstate 80 just west of the Quad-Cities near Walcott, Iowa. Police said that traffic slowed down on I-80, which was what led to the semi truck accident.
One semi truck crashed into the back of another large truck, pinning a man inside the cab. The force of the truck crash sent the truck's flat-bed trailer through the rear of the cab.
Rescuers started arriving on scene within minutes of the truck accident. Rescue crews included a MedForce helicopter and Davenport and Walcott firefighters. The firefighters spent over 30 minutes outside in severe conditions that were near zero wind chills trying to rescue the victim who was pinned in the cab. Once the victim was freed from the cab, the helicopter landed on the frozen highway and airlifted the truck driver to University Hospitals in Iowa City.
David Layton, the 55-year-old truck driver who was pinned in the cab, was wearing his seat belt when the accident occurred. Unfortunately, his condition is not fully known as he was brought into the hospital with severe injuries that may be life threatening.
The driver who drove his semi into the rear of Layton's cab is 33-year-old Thomas Leeds Jr. Iowa State Patrol said that Layton's semi truck started slowing down due to traffic ahead, and Leeds struck him from behind around mile marker 288. Leeds was not injured in this Iowa truck accident, but was shaken up from the crash.
This Thursday afternoon truck accident occurred around 12:35 p.m. and closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 for over an hour to clean up the debris. The eastbound lanes were not affected, and the westbound lanes reopened just after 2 p.m.
There is not word if charges have been filed in this matter.
The attorneys at Brady & O'Shea would like to wish David Layton a complete and fast recovery, and send our thoughts to his family during this difficult time.
