Iowa to Enforce Lead-based Paint Renovation, Repair & Painting Program...
Posted on 8/25/2010
The state of Iowa recently became authorized to administer the federal Lead-based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) program. Iowa became the second state in the nation to receive this authorization as Governor Chet Culver certified the program.
In order to receive this distinction, the state of Iowa has a program in place that is as effective as the Environmental Protection Agency's RRP program. The program does have to be implemented properly, and the state charged the Iowa Department of Public Health to enforce this RRP program.
The Renovation, Repair and Painting rule went into effect on April 22, 2010 and states, "anyone performing renovations or repairs for compensation must be trained and certified, and follow lead-safe work practices." Because so many homes in Iowa were built before 1978, lead-based paint in the home is a reality and has been the cause of many child lead poisoning cases.
Construction workers, contractors, renovators, painters, landlords, and property management companies will have to be trained and certified in lead-safe work practices. The goal of this program is to lessen and prevent lead exposure to children, and to bring attention to the lead poisoning problem in the state of Iowa.
Lead exposure can be dangerous and cause development delays, and behavioral and learning issues in children. The RRP program will help to protect children from lead poisoning in Iowa.
