Iowans May Have Lead in Their Reusable Store Bags

The Center for Consumer Freedom recently released a study showing that a number of reusable store bags sold at national stores contained excessive lead. Bags from 44 different stores were tested and 16 came back as having over 100 ppm (parts per million) in lead content - considered to be the acceptable limit.
 
Stores whose bags were found to be over the limit include CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens Pharmacy. Both stores have a large presence throughout Iowa. The bags tested were made of polypropylene a commonly used material made in China.

This is not the first time that lead has been found in reusable grocery bags. In 2010, a Florida newspaper found lead in reusable bags purchased at Wal-Mart and Target.

Lead poisoning is known to cause permanent damage to the neurological system. Most cases of lead poisoning are caused by chipping and peeling paint found in homes built before 1978.
