On April 13, 2011, a pickup truck crashed into a retaining wall early Wednesday morning, just prior to 8 a.m. on Mount Vernon Road SE. Iowa law enforcement indicated that the man who was driving this truck apparently had a medical condition that could have contributed to this Cedar Rapids car accident.
According to police, 50-year-old Morgan Karns, of Cedar Rapids, suffered a health problem at the wheel and stepped on the accelerator, rear-ending another car. That vehicle, driven by 27-year-old Marlene El-Orm, was pushed across westbound lanes about 100 yards and into a retaining wall. The crash occurred on Mount Vernon Road SE near 42nd Street.
When emergency responders got close to the scene, they noticed white smoke, which was believed to be a fire initially. When they arrived at the site, they discovered the smoke was from the pickup tires. The tires were burnt, and thick skid marks were left all over the roadway.
Both drivers of the vehicles involved in this accident were injured and taken to local hospitals for medical treatment. Neither of them had life-threatening injuries.
Officials investigated the crash and closed down a portion of Mount Vernon Road SE, and detoured traffic onto East Post Road.
The specific medical condition the man suffered is not known at this time.
The Law Office of Brady & O'Shea would like to wish both Mr. Karns and Ms. El-Orm a speedy and full recovery.
