Early on the morning of Sunday, January 9, 2010, a tragic rollover crash occurred in northwest Iowa, killing one pregnant woman and seriously injuring a passenger. The police reports indicate that a witness found the woman's body around 7:40 a.m.
Officials say that this Iowa car crash occurred because the driver lost control of her car. Angela Rae Evers was driving on a rural road and lost control about one mile northeast of Auburn. The car rolled five times before coming to a rest in a ditch. The 33-year-old driver was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Sadly, her unborn child was killed as well.
A deer hunter found Evers lying dead in a field and her passenger, 24-year-old Nathan Lee Meister, nearby. Meister told rescue crews that he crawled out of the car and over to Evers body. He was seriously injured in the car accident and was taken to a Des Moines hospital for medical care.
Meister told authorities that he thought the crash occurred after 1 a.m. but before 3 a.m. However, the body and accident was not discovered until later Sunday morning. Officials said that the overnight temperatures were extremely cold - in the single digits to low teens.
Meister was listed in serious condition at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines as of Monday morning. An autopsy for Evers has been scheduled. There is no other information regarding the details of the crash at this time.
We are saddened to hear of this tragic crash and loss of life. We send our thoughts and condolences to the victim's family and friends, and wish Nathan Lee Meister a full and speedy recovery.
