Motorcyclist Endures 3 Surgeries After Cedar Rapids Motorcycle Crash

Posted on Sep 22, 2011

On Saturday, August 27, 2011, a serious Cedar Rapids motorcycle crash occurred that badly injured a motorcyclist. Cedar Rapids police said the accident took place around 4:10 p.m. Saturday on Center Point Road and O Avenue NE.

Police indicated that a sport utility vehicle was southbound on the one-way street, traveling in the right lane of Center Point Rd NE, when the driver attempted to make a left turn from the right lane. The motorcycle was traveling in the left lane when the collision occurred.

The motorcycle caught on fire, causing the motorcyclist third-degree burns. He also suffered abdominal bleeding, a ruptured bladder, and many broken bones including a fractured elbow, femur, and multiple ribs. Brian Smith, the 30-year-old motorcyclist of Cedar Rapids, was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for medical care.

He went through 16 hours of surgery. In addition, he then had to endure another five-hour surgery on another day. Smith has now undergone three operations, and doctors have removed almost one foot of his small intestine. According to authorities, Smith is now off of a ventilator and in stable condition - just lucky to be alive.

Lori Dramstad, 46, of Cedar Rapids, was the driver of the SUV who hit the motorcycle. Police said they have charges pending against Dramstad.

The Law Offices of Brady & O'Shea would like to extend our best wishes to Mr. Smith for a fast and complete recovery.
