On Tuesday, August 17, 2010, a deadly car accident took place on Highway 28 in Norwalk, Iowa, at approximately 4:20 p.m. This head-on collision involved a passenger sedan and a sport utility vehicle (SUV) between Echo Valley Drive and Lakewood Bridge.
The passenger vehicle was driven by 62-year-old Sheryl Freeman of Norwalk, and the SUV was driven by 18-year-old Joshua Warden of Des Moines. Police say that a 2000 Mercury Marquis driven by Freeman was traveling southbound on Highway 28 when it collided head-on with a 1990 Jeep Cherokee. Warden, the driver of the Jeep, was traveling northbound when the Mercury Marquis allegedly crossed over the median and struck his vehicle head-on.
There were two passengers traveling in the Jeep at the time of the accident. Jennifer Letze, an 18-year-old from Des Moines, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other passenger, 18-year-old Tyler Rounds of Des Moines, as well as both drivers were critically injured.
Warden and Freeman were airlifted to local Des Moines hospitals, and Rounds was taken by ambulance to another hospital. All three survivors were listed in critical condition due to the severe injuries they suffered.
Highway 28 was closed down in both directions for several hours for cleanup, and the Iowa state patrol is still investigating this crash.
We are sad to hear of the loss of Jennifer Letze, and offer our condolences to her family and friends during this tragic time. We also wish the other three survivors a speedy and full recovery.
