Pedestrian Suffers Brain Injury After Bus Accident in Cedar Rapids

Posted on Nov 07, 2011

Near the end of September, an elderly woman was walking in a crosswalk across the intersection of First Avenue East and 15th Street when she was hit by a school bus. This Cedar Rapids bus and pedestrian accident critically injured the elderly woman.

Bonnie Nielsen, the 84-year-old pedestrian, remains hospitalized almost one month after her accident. She suffered critical head injuries, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, and a fractured pelvis in this Eastern Iowa crash.

Nielsen is still recovering after she underwent brain surgery. She will probably not be able to take care of herself, as doctors do not believe Nielsen is recovering like they would have hoped. When she is released, she will be released into the care of a private facility.

Vicki Laird, the 43-year-old bus driver, of Hiawatha, was questioned by authorities and told them that she did not see Nielsen in the crosswalk because she was blinded by the sun. Police charged Laird with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Because Laird was on her way to her first school bus stop, there were no children on board the bus at the time of this accident. The Cedar Rapids Community School District reassigned Laird to another position, so that she is currently not driving a school bus.

The Law Offices of Brady & O'Shea would like to continue to wish Bonnie Nielsen a complete recovery.
