Police Chase Ends in Cedar Rapids Rollover Crash

Posted on Sep 09, 2011

Early on the morning of August 21, 2011, a police officer found himself in a Cedar Rapids car accident when he flipped his patrol car onto its roof. This Sunday morning accident occurred in a residential neighborhood around 1:45 a.m.

According to the police report, Officer Ben Wery was attempting to locate a suspect in a harassment case, and was traveling southbound on 24th Street SE towards Mount Vernon Road SE when he came over a hill. Officer Wery, 27, indicates that there was a car stopped at the stop sign of the intersection of Bever Avenue SE and 34th Street that he had to avoid.

Wery swerved the patrol car to the left, but it went up an embankment and flipped over. Thankfully no other people or cars were injured.

Officer Wery was chasing an SUV that was involved in the harassment complaint, but he crashed on the way to stop the suspect. Other Cedar Rapids police officers continued to pursue the SUV at more than 100 mph. Because the chase traveled out of city limits and officers knew the name of the suspect, they decided to bring the chase to a halt.

Cedar Rapids police will investigate this crash internally.

There is no word on whether the police officer suffered any injuries in this Cedar Rapids accident.
