Rear-View Camera May Have Prevented this Eastern Iowa Back-over Accident

Posted on May 06, 2011

A deadly accident in which a toddler was backed over by his mother's car leaves a family devastated and a nation asking the question: when are vehicles going to come equipped with rear-view cameras?

This DeWitt, Iowa accident occurred when a mother was backing out of her driveway on Highway 30, when she accidentally ran over her 19-month-old little boy. Karen Pauley, the boy's mother, did not see her child behind the vehicle. Jack Pauly, the toddler, sustained head injuries in this Iowa crash. He was transported by helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospitals where he later died from his injuries.

Sadly, this tragic accident is not unique. In fact, back-over accidents in Iowa and throughout this nation occur every year. Most back-over accidents involve sport utility vehicles and children, since the cars are bigger and small children cannot be seen when standing behind the vehicle. According to the Department of Transportation, blind spots account for 60% of back-over cases in bigger cars.

There is now a bill gaining support called the Kids and Cars Safety Act. If put into law, this bill would require that more cars have camera systems and reverse sensing systems to alleviate backing up safety issues. It would also require that by the fall of 2014 all cars be equipped with back-up cameras.

When the car is put into reverse, a camera in the bumper displays the rear image, and sensors also beep to let the driver of the vehicle know when he or she is getting too close to something.

The Law Office of Brady & O'Shea is deeply saddened to hear of this tragic accident, and would like to extend our condolences to the family of Jack Pauly.
