There are five Iowa cities using red light cameras to help fight traffic violations and decrease the number of serious Iowa car accidents and injuries. Cedar Rapids, Clive, Davenport, Sioux City and Council Bluffs have installed red light cameras and have already seen them be effective.
The Executive Director of National Coalition for Safer Roads, David Kelly, attributes the decrease in Iowa car accidents and fatalities at intersections to automated red light cameras. The number of deaths and crashes occurring at intersections has been decreasing over the last five years in Iowa and throughout the U.S.
Although motorists dislike red light cameras because of the increased chance of receiving a fine and ticket, lawmakers believe that these cameras have reduced the number of fatal crashes in Iowa. "That is probably the single factor that is determining what is happening at intersections. We know that there are fewer people running red lights and getting tickets and that is driving the decrease down in fatalities at intersections," said Kelly, former head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Law enforcement has indicated that red light cameras are a valuable countermeasure to dangerous driving behaviors and motorists running red lights. Red light cameras have decreased Iowa auto accidents and fatalities, and increased these cities' revenue. In fact, Davenport netted over one million dollars last year from red light camera citations.
Although cameras are a good safety tool, they haven't prevented all intersection accidents in Cedar Rapids or the other cities. Police officers still need to patrol intersections, as Kelly states that the drivers of the cars running red lights are typically not the victims. Two-thirds of the victims killed at intersections are bicyclists, pedestrians, and others who had the right of way.
