The Des Moines Register is reporting that at least two deaths and hundreds of traffic crashes in Iowa were due to the snow and severe weather conditions that lasted from Sunday, January 9 through Tuesday, January 11, 2011. A cold front followed the snow and dropped temperatures. Wind chills were as low as 30 degrees below zero.
On Monday, January 10, a 50-year-old man from Nevada, Iowa died in a car crash. Authorities believe weather was a factor in this single-vehicle accident, which occurred in Cerro Gordo County. Kenneth Gordon's pickup truck rolled over, but sadly he was not wearing his seat belt.
On Tuesday, January 11, a 55-year-old man died in a car crash involving a tractor-trailer. Suad Adam collided into a parked tractor-trailer around 6:50 a.m. on Interstate Highway 80. No further details are available at this time; however, weather most likely was a factor.
On this same day, Des Moines police responded to 73 area accidents between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. And, on Monday and Tuesday medical centers were full of people who had been injured in traffic-related accidents in Iowa.
Officials are saying this is the heaviest snow Iowa has seen since the 2009 Christmas blizzard. Most of the southwest corner of the state saw between 8 and 9 inches of snow, Sioux City received 11 inches, and Des Moines saw just over 7 inches.
We are saddened to hear of the loss of life and these tragic Iowa car accidents. We send our condolences to the family and friends of both Kenneth Gordon and Suad Adam. We would also like to remind Iowa motorists to buckle up and drive carefully in these severe weather conditions.
