Severe Winter Weather Increases Car and Truck Crashes in Eastern Iowa

Posted on Feb 17, 2011

Severe winter weather in Iowa has made road conditions horrible. As a storm moved in Tuesday, February 1, 2011, strong winds coupled with heavy snow created blizzard conditions. Blizzard warnings lasted until Wednesday afternoon, with chances for whiteout conditions in certain areas of the state due to strong winds.

Over 200 schools were closed, several businesses closed, and flights at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids and at the Des Moines International Airport were cancelled due to the heavy snow, ice, and wind.
Several motorists were stranded and had to spend the night in their cars due to this severe winter storm, and many traffic collisions occurred due to the snow and ice covered roads. In fact, the Iowa State Patrol said that between Monday morning and Wednesday morning they assisted 428 motorists and there were 151 traffic accidents.

The Iowa Department of Transportation said there were many semitrailer accidents due to these harsh weather conditions. They said the empty trailers were more vulnerable to strong winds, and urged truck drivers to stay off the roads and wait the storm out.

One such accident involving a semi truck turned into a multi-vehicle crash on Tuesday around 1 p.m. The Iowa State Patrol said that they had to close a section of Interstate 80, just east of Des Moines, due to this Iowa truck crash. The tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on I-80 and slid out, ending up on the westbound side. Luckily no injuries were reported, but traffic was backed up for quite some time.

The attorneys at Brady & O'Shea wish all the victims of these Iowa car and truck crashes a complete and fast recovery. We encourage motorists to stay off the roads during harsh winter weather conditions, and wish everyone a safe winter.
