On Wednesday, November 24, 2010 a fatal accident occurred near Mason City on Iowa Highway 9. The accident occurred the afternoon before Thanksgiving and involved a passenger car and semi truck.
Police say the semi truck crashed into a car around noon on Wednesday. The accident occurred at an intersection on Iowa Highway 9. The truck driver was not injured in the crash; however, the driver of the car died in the wreck.
The man who was driving the passenger vehicle was identified as the mayor of St. Ansgar, a town of about 1,000 people. Marvin Kofoot, the 79-year-old mayor, died of his injuries. He was traveling with his wife, Milda Kofoot who was injured and transported to a hospital for medical care.
Iowa state troopers reported that northern Iowa received severe weather and icy road conditions on Wednesday, which may have played a role in this crash. There were several other crashes around Iowa the same day due to poor driving and road conditions, including two other deaths.
Kofoot was in his second term as mayor of the small Iowa town. His wife's condition is unknown at this time.
We are saddened to hear of this fatal Iowa car crash, and send our thoughts and condolences to the victims' families and friends.
