On Wednesday, November 24, 2010, Iowa received freezing rain that left icy road conditions for Thanksgiving travelers. In certain areas of the state, ice was likely to remain on the roads until Thursday, creating dangerous holiday driving conditions.
Three people died due to the slippery roads and winter weather driving conditions. The first fatal accident occurred before 11 a.m. when 66-year-old Louisa Peterson, of Madrid, drove her 2004 Kia into the northbound lanes of Highway 17. She hit a semi truck head-on near the Des Moines River bridge. Peterson died of her injuries, and police believe the bad weather was a factor in her death.
The second fatal crash occurred on Interstate Highway 25 in Cerro Gordo County south of Clear Lake. Lorna Clark, the 67-year-old driver, of Traverse City, lost control of her 2005 GMC Envoy. She was thrown from her vehicle when it rolled and died at the scene. Iowa State Patrol blames the wreck on the freezing rain; however, Clark was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.
The third fatal wreck that occurred on the same day involved a passenger vehicle and semi truck. The accident occurred near the junction of Iowa Highway 9 and U.S. Highway 65 north of Mason City. There were no details regarding this wreck, but weather was believed to be a factor in this crash as well.
State troopers responded to approximately 25 crashes on Wednesday across Iowa. Several other crashes involved victims of serious injuries. Some roads in northern Iowa remained iced over and the major highways remained wet.
We are sad to hear of these fatalities, especially so close to the holidays. We send out thoughts and condolences to the victims' families and friends of these tragic Iowa car accidents.
