Three Iowa Communities Receive Funding to Help End Lead Poisoning

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has recently awarded grant funding to 39 local projects, including three within Iowa, aimed at protecting children from lead poisoning. The three Iowa communities receiving HUD grant funding are Davenport ($2,475,000), Waterloo ($1,705,557) and Polk County ($2,475,000).

The funds will largely be used to eliminate lead-based paint hazards in older homes. The funds will also be used to conduct inspections for lead-based paint hazards and for training contractors in lead-safe work practices.

Seven percent of Iowa's children suffer from lead poisoning- 4 times the national average. Childhood lead poisoning is known to cause learning disabilities, loss of IQ, behavioral problems and other health conditions.
