An early morning collision between a car and a tractor-trailer truck left one man dead in this tragic Des Moines car accident. The crash took place on Monday, October 11, 2010 just before 6:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Southeast 14th Street.
Police said a silver Mitsubishi car was headed south on 14th Street as well as an 18-wheeler Penske truck when the two vehicles collided somehow. The driver of the Mitsubishi lost control and drove over the median into the northbound lanes of oncoming traffic and was t-boned by a pickup truck.
The roof of the Mitsubishi was cut off of the car during the rescue attempt, but sadly the driver died at the scene as a result of his injuries. The driver of the Mitsubishi was identified as 33-year-old Nolberto Flores-Zuniga of Des Moines.
Richard Essick, the 56-year-old pickup truck driver of Indianola, suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for medical care. The driver of the semi truck was not hurt in the accident.
Police do not know the exact cause of this deadly crash as the investigation still remains open; however they did issue a citation to Bradley Lutgen, the driver of the semi, for improper lane use.
We are saddened to hear of the outcome of this three-vehicle accident that took the life of one. We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Nolberto Flores-Zuniga and wish Mr. Essick a full and speedy recovery.
