On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, a catastrophic truck crash in Iowa occurred, claiming the life of a truck driver from Kentucky. The accident took place in Coralville within Johnson County, along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80. According to Iowa State Police, the truck crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the Coral Ridge Mall.
Officials indicated that the truck driver crashed into a cement barrier in the median, causing the truck to roll and catch on fire. It appeared that the diesel tank was punctured, causing it to ignite. The semi truck burst in flames, and the explosion was heard for miles.
Sadly, the truck operator was severely burned and died in this fiery truck crash. The truck driver was later identified as 40-year-old Gary Minix.
Investigators pulled Minix's phone records and determined that he was on the phone with his wife just minutes before this fatal crash. Investigators are trying to determine if he was still on the phone call when this accident occurred. Right now, they are not sure what caused Minix to crash into the median.
I-80, near Coral Ridge Mall and mile marker 240, was closed for several hours Tuesday night as investigators searched the scene for clues and cleanup of the accident occurred.
The Law Offices of Brady & O'Shea would like to extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Minix's wife and remaining family and friends.
