Uncle Arrested for Child Endangerment While Driving Drunk

Posted on Nov 03, 2010

On Sunday, October 24, 2010, a Cedar Rapids car accident occurred on Interstate 380 near the J Avenue NE overpass. Police apprehended the driver, who was fleeing the scene.

Around 5:45 p.m., the 41-year-old driver, Jeffrey E. Benton, was traveling along I-380 with three children in the car. His seven-year-old nephew was wearing his seat belt in the front seat. His two 11-year-old nieces were not wearing their seat belts. In fact, they were standing up in the back seat with their heads through the sunroof.

When the girls were getting back into the car to sit down, one of them fell onto the steering wheel. This led Benton to lose control of the vehicle. The car swerved, crashed into the median, and rolled over.

Benton helped the children out of the car, and then he ran away. The police caught him nearby and charged him for drunk driving, leaving a personal injury accident scene, and three counts of child endangerment. His blood-alcohol level was 0.202, well over the legal limit. He is being held on a $17,000 cash bail at the Linn County Jail.

on tThe condition of the children remains unknown at this time. We hope they were not injured in this Iowa car accident, and send our thoughts to their loved ones.
