Update on Fatal Cedar Rapids Car Accident

Posted on Jan 01, 1900

On September 21, 2011, we reported on a deadly Cedar Rapids accident on Old River Road near Big Bend Road that killed the driver and left a passenger stranded for hours. Although the accident occurred on August 24, 2011, we recently learned of new information and wanted to bring you an update.

After a full investigation into the crash that killed the driver, police determined that the 39-year-old driver, Michael D. Jones, of Cedar Rapids, was intoxicated. According to Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner, the autopsy revealed that Jones had a blood alcohol content of 0.123, and they also found traces of chemicals in his system that are found in marijuana.

Investigators determined that the deceased driver was also involved in a physical confrontation just prior to the crash. According to the passenger, 32-year-old Dannelle Fite, of Cedar Rapids, she willingly got into the car with Jones to go for a drive because he wanted to talk with her. She said that they had an argument, which turned into a physical confrontation in which Jones shot one round from a gun.

Although the gunshot didn't harm Fite, Jones missed the curve and went off the road, down into a ditch and into a tree. The autopsy did confirm that Jones' death was caused by injuries he sustained in this Eastern Iowa wreck.

The Law Offices of Brady & O'Shea would like to continue to wish Dannelle Fite a full recovery.
